Cabaret

Costume Co - Design

This production of Joe Masteroff’s Cabaret was directed by Andre Garner and David T. Little, drawing on the idea of the luring seduction of fascism. In this production the Emcee draws the audience into a world of violence that they cannot see until it is too late. I wanted to use the color red to symbolize that a character has sympathy to fascist ideology, so as the show progresses some characters begin to wear red accessories. Many of my costume designs for this show were based on “degenerate art,” art that was not deemed suitable by the Nazi regime. Often this “degenerate art” was by and including Queer people, which felt suitable for the story of Cabaret.

Research

Creating a moody, distressed, crumbling atmosphere was important to the direction of this production. Combining those elements with the “degenerate art” idea, I came up with this mood board. After Matthew, Kathryn, and I added our research together, we got to rendering.
